Life event services: New Zealand Public Service

Becky Cassam is the manager for SmartStart and Integrated Services at New Zealands, Department of Internal Affairs.

Becky will be talking about how the numerous 'life events', inter-agency collaboration and the research conducted has transpired into better services for the benefit of New Zealanders. Also addressed is how they design with people rather than designing for people.

There will be a few new services in the presentation however we have provided some examples of services they have worked on:

SmartStart (services.govt.nz) – access to cross government integrated services for parents of babies and children (99% of parents register the birth of their child via SmartStart, and apply for financial services)

Te Hokinga ā Wairua End of Life Service (services.govt.nz) – access to cross government and NGO services for someone planning their funeral or someone who is the administrator of someone’s estate

Death Documents (services.govt.nz) – digitised New Zealand Medical Certificate Cause of Death (Funeral Directors, Medical Practitioners and Coronial Services etc)

Becky works collaboratively across the NZ government, to identify improved customer experiences when accessing services digitally. (Kei Te Tari Taiwhenua au e mahi ana he Pou Whakahaere tīma Manapou tōkū tunga mahi).

A public servant of more than 30 years, Becky is a firm advocate of having the citizen at the centre of services being designed and has taken that approach with the suite of products currently under the SmartStart umbrella.

Collaboration is at the heart of everything she does and she is often heard talking about ‘the power of a cup of coffee’. Becky and her multi-disciplinary team use the concept of Life Events/Journeys to help steer their work with the primary cluster being in the ‘Parenting a pre-schooler 0-6 year old space’.
