Allow me to introduce myself

    Good afternoon everyone

I hope you are having a fabulous day.

I'm Jo Cantle and I work in the APSC as the Digital Workforce Strategy and Frameworks Lead in the Professions and Pathways Group. I'm leading a fantastic team to deliver a range of programs and activities to grow and measure the digital capability of the APS to ensure we have a workforce with the skills, mindset and behaviours to support the delivery of digitally enabled and data driven services to Australia.

I look forward to connecting with the community to share thoughts, experiences and generally support each other.

    Good morning,

I'm Cath Rayner and, like Jo, I work at the Australian Public Service Commission. The main focus of my work is performance measurement with an emphasis on working out how to measure changes in digital capability without needing lots of additional data collection.
I've worked and studied in technical fields since the early 1980s and have seen the slow increase in the proportion of women doing this sort of work. In my first job I was only woman who wasn't a typist working on the maintenance documentation for Parliament House. Being a young female on a major construction site at that time was interesting and occasionally challenging. 35 years later I'm in a digital team that's roughly 50:50 men and women with a female boss, who has a female boss.

Welcome :) So amazing to have you in the DP Women in Digital Community with us Cath. I love your background story - very inspiring.  I hear you have a goal to share as much of your rich and diverse knowledge as possible.  This makes us all very lucky to have Cath here with us in our community.  Cath - you kindly helped me the other day with guidance on scoping-out a review I am working on.  Are there any other topics you are particularly knowledgeable and passionate about?

Thanks Kerryn, it's good to have this sort of forum for us to share our experiences and support one another.
As part of my role as a performance analyst I can give help and advice on most aspects of performance measurement, monitoring and evaluation. My particular interest is in helping teams to define what they are trying achieve and how they will know they've achieved it. This takes the thinking beyond "what are we going to deliver?" to "What change will our deliverables make?" The difference is really important when you are working in an agile way because it helps you to refine, change or even abandon activities which aren't contributing to the change/outcome you are working towards.
More broadly I have a lot of experience as a researcher in the social sciences and a bit of experience in the physical sciences. I enjoy research design - working out what the question is, what data might answer that question and the best way to collect that data.

Hi Jo - and a very warm welcome to the DP Women in Digital Community.  Thank you for introducing yourself.  We are so lucky to have you onboard.  You hold an incredible wealth of information on such a large range of topics that might be helpful to other members.   I am sure you are happy to share your amazing experience with others.  I know HR is also one of your areas of expertise.  What are some of the other areas you can be a sounding board for others?

Hi Kerryn, and thank you for the warm welcome.
I am more than happy to share my knowledge and experiences with others. I love helping others to achieve their goals and be the nest they can be.
As you pointed out I have a significant background in all areas of HR, and also have broad experience in strategy, change management, program and project management, org design and culture, finance, procurement and metrics. I certainly won't have all the answers but my varied years of experience (yes I am now that old that I have 'years' of experience) in the public, private and NFP sectors have provided me with a depth of knowledge and the resourcefulness to find answers.
If there is anything I can help people with or just be a sounding board, please reach out.

    Hi all,

Glad to have found this community.

I work in Digital Capability in Qld government. I could pretty much repeat what Jo Cantle has said in her introduction, only at state level :) It's a challenge, but one I love.

I also have a passion (and side business) for developing aspiring women leaders, and get to bring that into my role with the Digital Leader course we've recently released.

Look forward to connecting, sharing and learning from everyone.

Hi Rochelle and welcome. Would love to hear more about your digital leaders course if this is something you can share. We also talked to some people in QLD Govt a while back about the Digital Program Governance courses you were doing via QUT - would be interested to hear how this is going. We have just been out to market for digital leadership support (see: https://marketplace.service.gov.au/2/digital-marketplace/opportunities/18754) and we are currently doing some review of our women in digital programs.

    Hi Rochelle

Thank you so much for finding us and a very warm welcome to the community - we are lucky to have you involved.

Fantastic to hear you have a passion for developing aspiring women leaders.  As Vanessa mentioned we would be keen to hear more about the Digital Leader course you've recently released ( Marisa Woodward, also a community member, from APSC is currently working on setting up something similar - maybe you two could make contact).

I'm reviewing the current Digital Profession Women in Digital Programs, interested to know if you have any insights.  These programs are active and open to state and local gov participation if you are interested. Let me know if you'd like to know more.

Look forward to connecting further and sharing thoughts and ideas.

Please feel free to forward the details of this community to your staff and local government networks, it would be fantastic to have them on-board.

A big warm welcome once again and chat soon

    Hi Kerryn and Vanessa,

I would be happy to share more about the Digital Leadership course. For some reason I can't get the Digital Marketplace to work for me, it just keeps spinning, however am always interested in chatting women in leadership. I'm happy to send out an invite if you both have time.

I will certainly pass on the information about this community.

    Thanks,

    Hello again Rochelle

    Lovely to hear from you.

Thank you so much for that.

A meeting would be fantastic! Let me know when suits :)

Let me know if you continue to have issues with the Digital Marketplace (I presume it is the APS Digital Market Place you refer to) - I can find a contact at the Digital Transformation Agency if that would be helpful.

Fantastic if you are able to share community info - this is developing into such a useful and vibrant little community.

    Kind regards,

    Kerryn

Hi all and thanks Jo for starting the thread

I'm Jade, when I'm at my day job I am CIO of the National Gallery but am currently on maternity leave. My little one just turned 6 months old. I am a Committee member of Women in ICT (WIC) and Women in Big Data Canberra Chapter. I am also an ANU PHD Candidate researching the progression of women in ICT within the Australian Public Service with a focus on mentoring and sponsorship (though I'm also taking a break from this as my little one doesn't sleep during the day, hoping that changes soon!)

Kerryn kindly reminded me that I should get back into the fray!  Hope everyone had a wonderful International Women's Day and got along to an event or two! Looking forward to carrying on the conversation!

    Cheers Jade

Hi Jade and a very warm welcome to the community :) - soooooo good to have you here :)

I am inspired by all of your amazing work and home life achievements.  Congrats on the arrival of your new little one.  I love how you are leading by example to take time for your family - so important.  You still seem active on committees etc I wonder how you juggle it all (especially if bub isn't sleeping during the day).

Your studies are so interesting, love to hear more about that when you are able to move forward with it.

Over the years I have known you you always manage to balance work and family commitments so well.  Do you mind sharing any of your tips and tricks with others who might benefit from your experience?

So gr8 to have you involved and I look forward to keeping in touch

    Cheers Kerryn

    Thanks so much Kerryn

Yeh balancing work and family is hard work but totally worth it.  I guess 'balancing' is a strange way of describing it, as its more of a continuum and there may not be balance at times! Hence why I a take chunks of time for myself and my family, whether it was before I had kids and took 3 months to travel or taking 12 months parental leave. I think its just as important to find 'balance' in whatever form whether you have kids or not.

I don't have any secrets, I'm not sure anyone does - if you do please let me know! I think it's about doing what's right for you.  At the moment when I don't sleep at night, I think to myself 'How long will I actually get to cuddle my baby to sleep all night long?!' Not that long in the scheme of things, so enjoy it, even if I can't keep your eyes open!  Though I know I am lucky enough to be in a position to have time to do that.

I enjoy working and keeping involved so it has to go hand in hand with family life for me. This time round I have taken a good 4-5 months of just mum time but as you say I have been getting back into participating in a few committees and events more recently.  Im hoping that my little one will afford me a bit more sleep soon so I can get in some more reading/research for my PHD!

I'm definitely keen to share what I find in my research as I get back into it.

Looking forward to keeping in touch through the Digital Profession.

    Cheers Jade

Jade, your post brought back so many memories of the highs and lows of combining work with being the parent of a very young child!
I was incredibly lucky in that when I started work again I was job sharing with a very good friend and had access to work-based childcare. My paid work was from 1pm to 5pm each weekday but I carved out a morning for myself by having one full day and four half days of childcare. Those few hours a week of time alone with my thoughts was really good for the whole family.
Several years later when one of my staff was on maternity leave we had a team catch-up every fortnight at a child-friendly cafe. This wouldn't necessarily work for everyone but it helped her stay connected to the workplace.
