Hi Everyone
I'm excited to share my key takeaways from our recent WiDD Career Insights meetup with Louise O'Rance, Assistant Secretary, Data Management and Reporting, Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. They are:
Career Advice:
· Choose your battles wisely.
· Understand how your role aligns with your organisation's goals and your superiors' priorities, including those of your boss's boss. Proactively focus on the most important work.
· Cultivate strong communication skills and feel comfortable with writing.
· Never undermine yourself, and don't let others undermine you.
· Don't hesitate to ask questions; there's no need to apologise for seeking clarity.
Getting into SES:
· Position yourself as the logical next choice for advancement.
· Seek sponsors and support from mentors.
· When preparing for interviews, decide on the impression you want to leave and aim to achieve that. Consider the balance between competence and being approachable.
Louise, please feel free to provide context, corrections, or elaborations on these points. Is there anything I might have missed?
I'd also love to hear from the community. Share your thoughts, comments, or anything that resonated with you during the event.
Let us know if you found this summary helpful, and if you have any suggestions for future topics, please share them.
Don't forget, our next Career Insights meet-up is scheduled for November 7, 2023. Mark your calendars and find more details here. We hope to see you there!

Happy Thursday!
What an amazing event yesterday. Fantastic to see so many of you able to attend (over 120 of us - wow!).
A huge thank you to Louise O'Rance, who provided a very inspiring insight to her career journey and gave us lots of useful tips. Also thank you to Nicola and Rochelle for coordinating and hosting the event - gr8 job!
The session was not recorded, by design, so we could all be free to be extra vulnerable, open and honest with our input. However, slides will be available shortly and I will add those to our library for your reference.
If you would like to continue the discussion from the session or if you have any questions/suggestions here is the place to post those. We'd love to hear your thoughts.
I'll post my key takeaways from the session to share with you soon.
P.S If you attended, please be kind enough to complete our (quick 3min) survey so we can continue to improve and provide you with valuable events: https://apscommission.syd1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8AoFU7XMHpdImVg
